It all started with a little land…

In 1960, Jim Johnston and his wife Virginia purchased a plot of land in Gilbert, Arizona to build a working farm on complete with a home for their three boys. The family grew cotton and wheat for many years until the late 1990’s during the rapid growth of suburban developments in the town of Gilbert.

In 2015, the Johnston Family Foundation for Urban Agriculture was formed to protect the 11 acre USDA Certified Organic Farm located in the heart of Agritopia®. The Foundation focuses on preserving urban farming in Arizona through production, beauty, and education. They host a variety of workshops, educational tours and events as well as plots for community gardens for local gardener enthusiasts.
